FAQ
CAN I SKP A DELIVERY OR PUT MY SUBSCRIPTION ON HOLD
Absolutely. Flexibility and accommodation are our core values. Please let us know the Friday before the delivery you want to skip, and we will put your order on hold until whatever date you request. We also understand that life happens, and if you need to make a last minute cancellation, please contact us as soon as you can. If we can redirect your produce to another client without taking a loss, we will do so, and credit your account; however this is not guaranteed. If your box has already been packed, you can even ask that it be delivered to a friend or family member, if their location works with our routing. Basically, we will always work with you as much as we can. We consider our job to be done not simply when the produce is delivered, but when it is consumed.
IS THE PRODUCE ORGANIC?
Approximately 50% is certified organic, but we select our produce by taste and quality first, and certification second. While certification is a useful tool, by having direct relationships with our farmers, we take a more nuanced and three-dimensional approach that is not possible for an individual consumer to have when buying groceries at the supermarket. We work with many very small farms for whom certification is either uneconomical or requires too much time and paperwork to be workable. Some farmers use conventional fertilizers, which precludes organic certification. While this is generally not preferable, if the resultant produce has the best flavor, we will choose that over certified organic produce. Furthermore, some of what we consider to be best practice in farming, like having goats on a farm, are not allowed under organic rules. Finally, there are organic pesticides and fungicides. There are many organic farms that overuse these products, resulting in subpar produce, even though it is organic. Another great example is the use of antibiotics in the dairy industry. Adding large amounts of antibiotics to animal feed became standard practice over time because it was found to increase yields. Organic certification was invented to counteract that. However, sometimes cows do get infections and actually need antibiotics, and under organic certification rules this is still not allowed. Basically, farming is complicated, and there is no one-size fits all solution. We do our best to navigate this complicated landscape for you, by working closely with all of our farming partners. As always, quality is our number one criterion.
CAN I CHANGE THE DAY OF MY DELIVERY?
We will always accommodate changes in delivery times when possible, but, as a small business, most of our deliveries are scheduled according to routing, and we have limited flexibility in this regard.
CAN I PERSONALIZE MY BASKET?
Absolutely, all requests are welcome. We always strive to cater every box to the preferences of each individual client. Naturally, things are limited BY availability because we are seasonal (please don’t ask us for peaches in February), but if we have it, and you want it, then you got it. Want a box of only berries? Don’t like lettuce or broccoli? Are you addicted to avocados? Just let us know.
HOW MUCH WILL I GET?
This is so variable. People don't like this answer, so for reference the average is about $5 per basket of berries (or figs or cherries) and $3-4/lbs in winter, and $4-5/lbs in summer for everything else. You get the most in August and the least in May. And vegetables are slightly cheaper than fruit. These are very rough numbers! Some produce, like avocados and passionfruit, are expensive, while others, like oranges and celery, are not. And then you add in seasonality and things become just impossible to pin down, because things like cherries and tomatoes always start expensive and end their season cheap. As always, we will work with your budget and preferences. We call it the fancy pants metric. Let us know your level of fancy pants, and we will delivery accordingly.
